by Mardy Sitzer

Oh how I hate to see ‘click here’ it is so unimaginative, screams potential scam or worse – malware. So why oh why are marketers still relying on ‘click here’ as a call to action?

Click here is the writing equivalent to the speech impediment ‘ugh’ so please find other ways to indicate that the hyperlink is clickable for a download or a clickable link to another web page. Your email marketing, web content and social posts could be so much better if you would show a little thought.

Try: VISIT; DOWNLOAD; VOTE; DONATE; BUY NOW; RESERVE NOW; APPLY NOW; JOIN US; EXPLORE; TAKE THE SURVEY; DETOUR; GET DISTRACTED. Your audience will get the idea and ‘click here’

Now that I got that off my chest – the whole ‘click here’ – like what – as opposed to clicking somewhere else or click your heels three times and say “I want to go home”. I offer this suggestion: if you get CLICK HERE then GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

While some of you might be thinking I’m off my meds or something with this snarky rant, allow me to clarify. I consider myself a marketing professional. When I see others imitating that role I get annoyed – especially when it winds up in my email inbox or on my news streams – today I was buried in these thoughtless pitches as a pre-holiday push and it just hit me so hard I couldn’t hold this post back. No meds required.
